Gum Disease is the disease of the gums and the bone that supports your teeth. It can be a result of poor hygiene, but some people are more prone to this type of infection even with proper brushing and flossing.
It doesn’t always come with painful noticeable symptoms, so many people are dealing with gum disease and don’t even know it!

Almost half of all adults in the United States have some form of gum disease. It’s the leading cause of tooth loss.
Healthy gums should be pink, firm and keep your teeth securely in place. Your gums shouldn’t bleed when you touch or brush them.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

The initial symptoms of gum disease can include red and swollen gums, bleeding gums after brushing or flossing your teeth, this stage of gum disease is called gingivitis.

If gingivitis is untreated, the tissues and bone that support the teeth can also become affected. This is known as periodontitis, or periodontal disease. Symptoms of periodontitis can include bad breath (halitosis), an unpleasant taste in your mouth, loose teeth that can make eating difficult, gum abscesses (collections of pus that develop under your gums or teeth).

What are the treatment for Gum disease?

A deep cleaning (also called scaling and root planning) goes above and beyond what you get during a standard dental cleaning. We’ll remove bacterial buildup from under the gum line to reduce gum inflammation and to prevent the spread of disease

Gum disease is caused by bacteria. In addition to deep cleanings, we at times may recommend placing an antibiotic, such as Arestin, to help heal the gum infection.

The gum is separated from the tooth and later reattached in a new position. This involves reshaping and smoothing the bone. After treatment is complete, the gumline will most likely be lower. This leaves more of the tooth exposed. If the root is exposed, ongoing treatment with fluoride or other treatment options may be needed to reduce sensitivity
